Handwriting analysis can be traced back over 2,000 years ago. Aristotle and his followers theorized that a link between handwriting and personality existed. The Chinese also thought there were connections between writing and character. Early Europeans, however, are credited with "fathering" what has become the scientific graphology we know today.
In 1622, Camillo Baldi, an Italian physician and university professor, believed he could understand a writer's personality through the strokes and loops of their handwriting. Convinced of the importance and validity of his research that he published his findings. It was the first book of handwriting analysis.

Later, Jean Hippolyte-Michon, a French priest, coined the term "graphology". He studied thousands of samples of writing over the years and established a system of assigning a character trait to a specific stroke or mark in the writing. Michon called it a "fixed signs and rules" theory. Simply put, if a particular stroke occured in the writing, a specific personality trait would be present in the writer. If the writing lacked the stroke, the writer would not demonstrate that particular characteristic.

From the 1600s to the 1900s graphology spread through the Italian, German, French, and English languages. Graphology services jumped another leap forward when psychology was accepted as a profession. Now conscious as well as unconscious thought could be used to explain someone's handwriting--giving further credibility to what what most graphologists believed all ready--handwriting is an extension of the writer's emotions and mental state.

In 1980, The Library of Congress changed its Dewey- Decimal classification of graphology. Once listed under the heading of occult, graphology is now recognized as a science and catagorized in the psychology section: again proving the wide acceptance of handwriting analysis as a legitimate means of determining a person's character.

Improving self-awareness is the number one reason people use handwriting analysis. Still, graphology services have become popular with business managers and Human Resource Directors throughout the United States. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sanctioned graphology an unbiased tool for (companies) determining a job applicant's suitablity--making handwriting analysis an effective, profitable, and legal means of hiring employees.

Graphology services give insight into the writer's personality and emotional stability. Despite all the useful information, though, there are a few things handwriting analysis won't reveal. Among those unknowns are: gender, race, age, and right or left handedness.

Graphology does not predict the future, represent the occult, or in any way denote anything supernatural. Handwriting analysis is strictly grounded in scientific methods and should be interpreted by a professional.
